Goals and Objectives

Insomnia is experienced by over 30% of the adult population at some point in time, and the prevalence of insomnia increases with age. The elderly are often viewed as difficult to treat, but they are among the patients with the greatest need for treatment. As the elderly population grows in this country and the number of long-term care (LTC) residents increases, healthcare professionals working in the LTC sector need to be properly educated on how to best diagnose and treat this common condition. Research indicates that the utilization rates of sleep agents in nursing homes vary dramatically from institution to institution. Hence, there does not appear to be a consistent practice pattern to help guide clinicians, underscoring the need for evidence-based education. This program will present practical strategies that outline how to evaluate and manage insomnia using pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic strategies. The presentation will also address which pharmacologic agents are most appropriate for those with multiple comorbidities.

Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:
1. Discuss ways to recognize those who may be at risk for insomnia
2.
Evaluate barriers that hinder proper diagnosis and management
3. Outline appropriate behavioral and pharmacologic strategies for treating insomnia in the long-term care setting
4. Summarize efficacy and safety data for pharmacologic agents approved for the treatment of chronic insomnia
5. Describe the impact of updates to the State Operations Manual on the management of insomnia in the long-term care facility
