Session Description
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents are auditing long-term care facility operations for compliance with controlled substance laws and regulations. Is your facility prepared to address controlled substance issues with a DEA auditor? And, what is the purpose behind these audits? As a follow-up to the to your previous learnings, learn more about ongoing controlled substance issues in long-term care.

Goals and Objectives
1. Update colleagues on the current status of DEA audits and controlled substance issues in the long-term care industry.
2. Compare and contrast "chart orders" and "prescriptions," and outline DEA's requirements for a controlled substance prescription to be considered valid.
3. List potential issues that should be addressed by facilities when controlled substances are utilized from an emergency kit in a nursing facility.
4. Discuss ways to prepare for a DEA audit of the long-term care pharmacy and/or nursing facility.
