Session Description

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released new surveyor guidance at F-Tag 309 pertaining to pain management - effective March 31, 2009.  The new interpretive guidelines focus on the facility's recognition, evaluation, and management of pain in residents who have pain, are being treated for pain, or have the potential to have pain symptoms.  Attend this session to learn an overview of the new guidelines and how the consultant pharmacist and long-term care pharmacy can help the facility maintain compliance.

Goals and Objectives

1. Highlight the main points of the new Interpretive Guidelines for F-Tag 309 published in the CMS State Operations Manual.
2. Discuss the regulatory implications for long-term care pharmacies in regards to timely delivery of pain medications.
3. Describe how the consultant pharmacist might interact with the surveyor during the facility's survey to answer questions about the pharmacological treatment of pain.
